ADSL Modem
Provided by an Infineon PSB 50601 (Amazon) ADSL chipset. This is a separate SoC with its own firmware that is configured in bridge mode with an embedded connection to the switch chip. This should appear on switch port 4 with an IP address of 192.168.5.1. Telnet and SSH to the ADSL chipset is unavailable, though there appears to be a web server and a serial port with a locked down terminal. ADSL does work by setting up a PPPoE session from within OpenWrt, but no modem statistics are available. It is suspected that there may be diagnostic webpages present in the chipset firmware that publish ADSL statistics but further analysis is required.
Serial Ports
There are two serial ports of interest on this unit, both are populated:
- J3 header next to the BCM4718 SoC (Where Belkin / OpenWrt would usually reside)
- J4 header under the grey shroud covering the ADSL chipset (For ADSL firmware)
Both headers have identical pinouts.
The silkscreen indicates Pin 1 on each header:
Directions are relative from the router (I.E plug your Rx into router's Tx)

Voltage levels are 3V3, serial port settings are 8N1, 115200 bps

Bad Flash
Frigid mac os. Adapted from the generic DSLreports solution
A serial adapter is optional, but it does give detailed information about the router status during this process
This was tested using a Windows XP virtual machine but is by no means exclusive. It assumes:
- The target fails to boot (I.E. falls back to CFE shell at power on)
Sxuptp Driver Not Working
The aim of this process is to return the router to a known working firmware (I.E. stock) before flashing experimental builds again. Flashing known working builds of OpenWrt will likely work as well.
Belkin Sxuptp Driver Windows 10
Other de-bricking strategies may work, see notes afterwards
- On the VM, ensure that the Microsoft tftp client is installed. This should be installed by default, Vista upwards need it installed via “Add/Remove Windows Components” in “Add/Remove Programs”
- Open port 69 (or temporarily disable the firewall - not recommended)
- Set the IP address of the machine to anything in the 192.168.2.0/24 range, with the exception of 192.168.2.1
- Open a command prompt and type in the following but do not press enter (yet):
- Unplug the router then plug the router back in, immediately followed by pressing 'enter' at the Windows command prompt
- If the transfer is successful you will get a message saying “Transfer successful: 8028160 bytes in X seconds”
- If a serial adapter was attached, you will see the router receiving the file then show 'Programming' at the prompt once the transfer is complete
- Wait between 5 to 10 minutes, if everything went well the top green LED will start flashing and the router's webpage will once again be at 192.168.2.1
Notes
Kernel Panic / Soft Brick
It appears that if you successfully flash a firmware with a functional boot block but kernel panics during boot for whatever reason then recovering is a bit more complicated. As noted below, trying to flash firmware via CFE other than automatic TFTP recovery doesn't seem to work.
You will need a serial adapter for this as CFE commands are required
https://sick-download.mystrikingly.com/blog/mate-translate-translator-4-0-6. The easiest way out is to break the current image bootblock so that the CFE is forced to intervene. One way to break it is as follows:
- On the panicked router, attached a serial adapter to header J3 and power cycle the unit.
- Using your favourite serial terminal emulator, hit spacebar during router CFE boot to get into the CFE prompt.
- Follow steps 1 through 5 in the previous procedure to set up the remote machine
- At the CFE prompt type 'flash -noheader : flash0.trx' (sans quotes) and hit enter
- At the remote machine start sending a firmware over TFTP
- The CFE should read in the firmware, but only write 28 bytes or so
- CFE should now attempt to reboot, find a bad bootblock and read from TFTP three times
- At this point, continue from step 5 above to recover to stock
- If the router times out, power cycle and try again.
General
- Router default IP is 192.168.2.1 for both Belkin and CFE
- When CFE boots it gives three attempts to boot from TFTP before hitting CFE shell, this is where the previous procedure uploads the stock firmware.
- This router contains a CFE mini web server at 192.168.2.1 activated in the event of boot failure. I could not get it to flash any firmware however (serial logs indicated it tried to read the input file 5 times then stopped, no obvious signs of file rejection)
- If using a *nix machine to recover from a bad flash, 'atftp' is known to work while the plain 'tftp' seems to transmit wrongly sized firmware images as indicated by its own logs.
- Using 'Load' and 'Boot' commands via CFE with the -tftp option froze the unit (stuck at 'loading' on prompt), had to pull power in order to get the shell back. Used tftpd-hpa on Debian 8.
